To help our Highland businesses during this challenging time, the Highland District Council is starting a new “Business of the Month” program. Every few months, we’ll profile a different business.
The March 2021 Featured Business is 5 Star Cafe, a coffee shop, cafe, restaurant and bar which first opened in 2001. It was purchased in 2007 by John Ghebru, an Eritrean immigrant, and his family.
5 Star Cafe serves bakery items, smoothies, Ethiopian sandwiches and vegetarian items. Their specialty is Injera, an Ethiopian flat spongey bread made from teff flour and served with lamb or beef. 5 Star is also well known in the community for spicy sauces imported from Ethiopia and Eritrea, and organic coffee imported from Ethiopia. In fact, several local restaurants purchase coffee from 5 Star Cafe.
There is a lot of socializing that goes on in the Cafe. People can watch football (soccer), play foosball and billiards. In addition, the Cafe serves as a resource center for the African community. They offer networking, education resources, job search assistance and sharing of stories.
5 Star Cafe is newly renovated and reopened in February after a 2-month renovation. It is now a cafe, restaurant and bar.
