Community Services Committee Meeting

January 13th, 2010

The meeting was called to order by Chair Jennifer Taylor James at 7:05 P.M. Roll call was then taken. The following members were present:

Jennifer Taylor James, Robert Brandtjen, Gary Thompson, Paul Krech, Sherry Goodman and Larry Hampel.

Rick Hugley and Loren Sorenson were absent. Phil Ledermann had resigned.

Agenda was approved

December minutes were approved pending minor change.

Public Comment:

There was no public comment

Crime Prevention:

Rick Barthelomew  gave his first CPC report. Rick informed the committee that August 3, 2010 is the date set for National Night Out. Rick also reported that June 2, is the date for National Night Out Prep meeting sponsored by the city-all are invited to attend.

Also discussed was possible use of the Sibley Plaza "sub-station" or office for use by Rick as CPC. Rick argued that this would allow him the greatest possible contact with the community and his desire to get to know them.

Rick also reported on the meeting with fellow CPC and Commander Luna on a change of the St. Paul Police Department's mission statement to one that is more "user friendly" featuring more community involvement rather than past behavior of simply taking a report and leaving.

Rick also reported that obtaining crime stats from the SPPD was unusually difficult and time consuming. Rick reported that, vis-à-vis this issue,  the SPPD is working on a new system for information dispersal. In the future, the citizens of Highland should call Rick or email him requesting crime information and that he will personally respond with an answer.

Other Business:

Parameters for "Highland Night Out" were discussed and a resolution for the full board's support was produced for the February 4^th board meeting.
